"In writing about my place on the Clackamas I forget that we are talking about 10 acres. I guess it is the years behind it or the thousand things that happened there or merely the glow in which my
memories enfold it." Clyde Rice, "The Why of the Place"

Welcome
The Rice Place is a seminal and ongoing endeavor of the Friends of Clyde Rice. Clyde and Ginny Rice's historic home will serve as a retreat for writers, artists, musicians, naturalists, and others who seek a safe haven in which to reflect and create. Friends of Clyde Rice, a non-profit organization, seeks to promote literature and art that speak to those characteristics that make a place special or unique, as well as to those that foster a sense of genuine human kinship to the land. To Clyde Rice, whose name we honor for his literary achievements in this regard, the Pacific Northwest was such a place. We purchased Clyde and Ginny Rice's property in 1995. The 10-acre, largely natural, greenspace on the Clackamas River, along with the historical hand-built rammed-earth house, will be preserved in perpetuity as a place for generations to experience. We invite you to explore this site to learn more about Clyde Rice, The Friends, and The Rice Place. You can also learn more about us by perusing our current and past newsletters HERE.
